Canvas of the Soul: Book Reading and Forum with Nimah Nawwab

May 22, 2012. The audience was mesmerized as Nimah recited works from her new book, Canvas of the Soul: Mystic Poems from the Heartland of Arabia.

Her recital of "Fiery Embrace," left a silent chill on the audience as she recounted the 2002 fire of a girls school in Mecca. When asked about why women are unable to drive in Saudi Arabia, she attributed it to the issue of guardianship. She finally said that the uprising in the Arab world is not an Arab Spring, but a very harsh winter.

This event was held at the Brecht Forum and sponsored by the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Theater of the Oppressed Laboratory. Read more about Nimah here.
