MLT Media Conference in New York City (April 25-26)
On April 25-26, 2009, the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) held its first regional Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow (MLT) conference, convening 120 U.S. and European participants in New York City. Following the January 2009 global MLT forum in Doha, Qatar, this fourth convening marked a significant milestone in the history of the MLT program.
The conference focused specifically on the media. It offered participants a diverse range of intensive media trainings, imparting the MLTs in attendance with concrete tools to become effective media spokespeople. In addition, it featured several exciting learning events, including "fireside chats" with prominent journalists, "learning journeys" to media outlets around New York City, and an MLT "Spirit of Guidance" award to Reza Aslan for his outstanding contribution to the Muslim community.
The April media conference was sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and held in partnership with the Cordoba Initiative.

"Most of the time, foreign Arabic-speaking channels fail 'to win the hearts and minds' of the Arab public for three reasons: arrogance, impatience, and lack of listening from the communicators' side. Foreign Offices must be humble enough to admit mistakes. The Arab public is more likely to expect propaganda and spin rather than truth from TV channels like Deutsche Welle, France 24, or Russia Today..."
