As we've seen from Egypt and Tunisia, social media messaging and communication can change the consciousness of a culture overnight. All it took was a handful of dedicated people to topple a government. This same type of urgency combined with a handful of dedicated people, like the ones here on this panel, can change the perceptions Americans have of Muslims and Muslim Americans.
The panel originated as a result of the Cordoba Center controversy in September 2010.

CNN's 'Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door'
See the documentary at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. April 2 on CNN
When Soledad O'Brien tweeted "Would you be ok with a mosque in your community" before the showing of her latest CNN 'In America' series, you were almost afraid of what some of the answers would be.
Following an intense year of misinformation and divisive dialogue largely propagated by some for political reasons, CNN decided to take the bold step of tackling the issue head on with their upcoming documentary "Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door." All too familiar with the overwhelmingly inaccurate portrayal of Muslims in the press, I was skeptical to say the least. Sitting in a room with fellow Muslim and non-Muslim journos alike at the advanced screening on Thursday, I ended up, in one simple phrase, pleasantly surprised. Read More

Women’s Interfaith Event
Feb. 5, 2011, New York. Muslim and Jewish women gathered at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrews to commemorate Rosh Chodesh. This is a Jewish tradition where women gather on each new month on the Hebrew calendar to study, discuss, pray and sing. For this month, B’nai Jeshurun wanted to celebrate the event with Muslim women. We all came together and shared stories from the scripture and together, reflected on what faith means to each of us. The highlight of the event was when we read passages from the Exodus and the Quran about the story of Prophet Moses – when his mother cast him in the river to protect him. That striking example of similarities in faith became a special moment of bonding. So touched were women by the camaraderie that developed, that we all left with the promise of coming together again – soon.
Intern Corner
Hi! My name is Maia Matsushita and I interned for ASMA for ten weeks during the winter of 2011. My main responsibilities were centralized in the front desk/reception area–but beyond picking up the phones and managing the office calendar, I was able to do a lot of writing for the organization as well as attend speaking events Daisy would be invited to in the New York area. I am a sophomore in college right now, minoring in Creative Writing, and so the experience of writing for ASMA was completely invaluable and helped to solidify my career plans of being a professional writer. During my internship I was also able to work closely with the amazing other staff members in the office, especially in the preparation and planning for the March 6th TODAY I am a Muslim TOO rally in Times Square, an event for which I am currently writing a report on for distribution to the other sponsor organizations. As an intern at ASMA, you will learn so much just from being around the passionate, driven, and intelligent people who drive the office programs such as WISE and MLT.
