ASMA would like to announce the premiere of two important documentaries coming to PBS this week:  Women, War & Peace, a five-part series that examines the impact of modern armed conflict on women and highlights the important role women are playing to broker peace, and Wham! Bam! Islam! a documentary that follows Naif Al-Mutawa as he creates THE 99, the world's first superheroes based on Islamic culture and society.

Women, War & Peace

Women, War & Peace is a bold new five-part PBS television series challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain. The vast majority of today’s conflicts are not fought by nation states and their armies, but rather by informal entities: gangs and warlords using small arms and improvised weapons. The series reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. Yet they are simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. The series spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security, and reframing our understanding of modern warfare.

Women, War & Peace will premiere on PBS tomorrow, October 11. The program will broadcast nationally in the US.  Check Local listings for time or download from PBS.ORG.

Wham! Bam! Islam!

THE 99 are the world's first superheroes based on Islamic culture and society, created by Naif Al-Mutawa.  WHAM! BAM! ISLAM! is a documentary by Isaac Solotaroff that tells the story of Naif Al-Mutawa and his venture to create THE 99.
