Muslim Women Pledging to Support the Jihad Against Violence

On this International Day of Peace, all of us must renew our commitments to peace and non-violence. The Holy Qur'an directs us to, "Hold fast by the covenant of God all together and be not disunited, and remember the favor of God on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren." Thus, as communities throughout the globe remain mired in conflict and violence, it is incumbent upon each of us to deploy our passions, talents and resources to promote peace, justice and stability. Women must be front-and-center of such work. One important effort was initiated this past July at the Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality's (WISE) "Muslim Women: Building Institutions, Creating Change" conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The WISE women in attendance committed themselves to struggling for peace and justice in their communities, rejecting all forms of violence as part of a global WISE campaign, "Jihad Against Violence."
