Dear Friends and ASMA Supporters,
As Salaamu Alaykum. Peace be upon you and may Ramadan bring you many blessings.
It is an honor to thank you for your gracious generosity and show of support for the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA). Your gifts of encouragement, capital, connection and inspiration have directly charted the course of ASMA's success and worldwide impact, this year more than ever before.
As a token of our gratitude, we are happy to highlight the successes of the past year that your support, together with that of ASMA's generous community of stakeholders and friends, has made possible:
WISE (Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality)
- Over 200 women from 55 countries gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the acclaimed conference, "Muslim Women: Building Institutions, Creating Change."
- The Global Women's Shura Council launched its "Jihad against Violence" campaign.
- The Muslim Women's Portal, a resource for and about Muslim women, will launch after Ramadan (www.wisemuslimwomen.org).
MLT (Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow)
- The 2009 MLT conference in Doha, Qatar in January, 2009, convened 300 dynamic Muslim leaders from nearly 70 countries around the world (www.muslimleadersoftomorrow.org).
- Over 100 young American Muslim leaders in civil society, politics, academia, the arts and media received advanced media training in NYC in April, 2009, toward effective dissemination of their collective message of peace, pluralism and justice.
- The MLT "Spirit of Guidance" award was given to Reza Aslan for his outstanding contribution to the Muslim community.
- The launch of our MLT-India chapter is scheduled for September 24 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Interfaith/Community Outreach
- Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs came together at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, NYC, to engage in an interfaith dialogue for peace known as the Peace Feast.
- ASMA participated in a one-mile peace walk past ground zero, culminating in an interfaith closing ceremony at St. Peter's Church.
Media Outreach
- ASMA's Executive Director, Daisy Khan, has been featured in The Economist and The New York Times and has appeared on CNN, Fox News, and NPR. Daisy continues to write regularly for The Washington Post's On Faith Blog.
- Articles and blogs authored by Imam Feisal have been disseminated globally, featuring Muslim/West issues including: the role of religious leaders in the Arab-Israeli conflict, reflections on President Obama's speech to the Muslim world, the Iranian elections, President Sarkozy's remarks about the burqa, and the issue of Muslim holidays in the United States.
- A number of MLTs were interviewed on CNN, Voice of America, and NPR after President Obama's speech aired on June 4, 2009.
Ramadan is a time of giving back to those in need. We encourage you to support the many communities ASMA serves, and the many more communities who need us, by giving to ASMA during this blessed month. For your ease, we have created a Zakat worksheet (download here) to calculate your Zakat. Please note that it is recommended to donate before Eid to ensure that it qualifies for Zakat ul-Fitr. All donations are fully tax deductible.
You can donate to ASMA in one of the following ways:
Thank you for supporting ASMA's critical work in the world. We encourage you to spread the word about our efforts online and in your community. With warm regards,
